How can a Community Parent support you?

Unlike other jobs, where we can be trained, we are expected to 'know' how to be a 'good parent'. Parents are entitled to information and support in their parenting. We are here to help you find out
where that information and support is available in your community.

How can a Community Parent help?

  • makes a difference to the day to day lives of the families supported by reducing isolation and sharing ideas, information and experience.
  • support families with a wide variety of issues whether it is parenting   difficulties such as healthy eating, behaviour problems, routine building, play and development or sleep problems.
  • the practical aspects of family life such as budgeting, spending time as
    a family/having time to themselves, housing problems and time management.
  • always avoids giving advice but provides information and guidance on issues of importance to the family.
  • offers suggestions and ideas focusing on the parent rather than the
    child.
  • signposts families on to other agencies, groups and services in the
    area
  • encourages parents to get involved in the local community.
   

Course information
The Community Parents training course runs for approximately 20 weeks (not in term time). Free childcare and lunch are provided, and all expenses incurred in volunteering reimbursed. The course tutor is responsible for assessing and marking coursework.
The awarding body is City and Guilds and the course is a Level 2 Certificate in Employability and Personal Development.

A Community Parent course covers the following topics:

How to carry out professional home visits to families within the Hastings and St. Leonards community.
How to maintain boundaries and confidentiality when visiting families.
How to sign post families to services within the community and encourage families to make use of them.
